Is David Warlick Right?

I thought his post this morning, about the role of writing, was fascinating!

I like this guy, because that's exactly what I think. My political opinions aren't very popular in my neck of the woods (Texas) but I think the right-wing wave that has overtaken our country the past few years is not beneficial for our country and our people. We'll see what the new elections bring; I think Iraq may be the right-wing's downfall. I can only hope. But, back to the topic... writing critically does lend itself to a thinking populace. It is a very important manner of communication, and if more people can do a more effective job of communicating clearly in writing (not sure I just did that with that sentence, but that's okay) then they may be more apt to share their views, and people will be more apt to follow their opinions and be persuaded. Very interesting discussion.

I read this article last night. He is dead-on. They do this because it is subjective. They cannot easily present scores without having to defend the subjective nature of the assessment. It is critically important to write across the core subjects. Literacy is the passport to lifelong success. It should be a priority.

It is one of the reasons I think blogs will play an important role in literacy development and students discovering their voices.

I do think writing is coming back, but I am afraid people will refer to this as yet another "trend" or theses education "phases" come in "cycles".

Okay, writing is necessary! No matter what time it is. I thnk College Board and the National Commission on Writing has really helped the cause.

Please see the brochures and print docs in the following post that are extremly helpful in explaining the importance of writing.
