On the many educational uses of blogs....

Scott's wonderful post on the pedagogy of blogging reminded me to share a graphic I found recently, which rather neatly summarizes many different uses of weblogs in education.

Wow, Pete. That is a great pictorial representation of what we are (or should be) doing with blogs. I would like to see an expanded version of that after some group brainstorming by the experienced edubloggers out there.

Thanks so much for that. I am adding it to my del.icio.us account for future reference.

    Hey,
Great graphic! Thanks for the resource. Hopefully it will come in handy convincing administrators to be open to blogs! kat

One of the dangers of blogging (or any tool, for that matter) is that discussions about it get simplified--"all blogs are public," "all blogs are life journals," etc.

I was intrigued especially by the activities in the center of the chart--Weblogs as personal knowledge management systems (something we all could use) or reflective journals. Following up on Katherine's point, such activities might find greater favor in a setting where there is concern about the public nature of student writing.

We talk a lot about the organization of blogs, but I think that how a person organizes his or her blog would reflect to some degree his or her knowledge.

I would love to learn more organizational tools to help both my students and myself to keep up with posts.

Scott, thanks for modeling the use of tags with us. I want to learn that, too.

I agree with Katherine. The graphic could be a VERY vital tool in getting adminstrators on our side and hopefuly gaining more resources to use this technology.

Let's get some of these printed out.

    Happy 4th!

    Hi all, and Happy 4th!

Pete do you have the citation for that graphic? I think you have shared that with me before, but I definitely need to set up a del.icio.s account to keep track!

Janelle, I think that people organize according to their knowledge, yes, but also according to their learning stlyes as well. There's probably research out there as well on how people organize blogs.

If not, then that's an area some of us could study.

I'd like to see a virtual research center in our Village so that we can support ongoing research in this field. That's some of what I was sketching out for the Village School.

Katherine, I think administrators have so much "fear" bc of legal issues dealing with protection, safety, and security that they haven't been willing to look at the pedagogical benefits.

    Thanks Pete!
